Using the Monitoring protocol for deaf babies and children: training workshop
Click here for the training brochure page for this course.
This workshop will help participants to use the Early Support Monitoring protocol for deaf babies and children to do two things:
- celebrate the progress of these children and
- understand their current achievements and needs more effectively across all areas of their development.
The second edition of the monitoring protocol was published in September 2006. You can read about it and download it here.
Who it's for
The workshop will be valuable for parents/carers and for all practitioners who work with deaf children and their families from birth to 5 years or soon after identification.
How you'll benefit
You will gain knowledge, understanding and confidence in the use of the monitoring protocol, so that it can be used as part of a mutually respectful working relationship between parents and practitioners. Parents who have a deaf baby find that they have to change and adapt so they can cope with the new and unexpected issues and problems they now face as a family. Helping families to adapt and to move forward is a complex process, but an integral part of this is helping them to understand and provide for their child's needs effectively.
The monitoring protocol shows parents how their child is doing and what they can do to promote development further. It is proving invaluable in enabling parents/carers to share their observations of their child and gives a basis for discussions with practitioners. It supports decision making, informed choice and the drawing up of Early Support family service plans.
How the workshop is structured
In this one-day workshop, participants will learn how the monitoring protocol fits into the Early Support programme, how it was developed, what it contains and how to use it. They will also learn about the specific developmental needs of deaf babies and children and how to take account of these when designing and delivering effective intervention for families and children.
